THE STORY & THE CHALLENGE

An ambitious effect, anchored in real cinematography.

A dark music video exploring grief, memory and inner torment, filmed entirely at night at the Palace of the Marquis of Pombal in Oeiras.

The chapel climax called for angel wings to ignite, with fire around the altar. Practical flames at this scale were neither safe nor permitted in the protected historic location.

Where AI contributed

Generative AI was used exclusively for the climactic chapel sequence. Static projected blue wings were animated and transformed into burning wings, with additional flames integrated around the altar.

The effect had to follow a forward tracking shot: scale, perspective, reflections and simulated firelight had to remain coherent as the camera moved.

The filmmaking craft

The live-action performance, locations, camera movement, practical lighting and visual atmosphere were created through traditional filmmaking. A 600-watt projector established the wings’ composition, scale and light direction on set.

Editing, compositing and colour grading integrated the generated elements. A test of the transformation was shown to the artist, who approved its use in the final video.

What this approach makes possible

The practical wing projection gave the later effect a physical starting point. Framing, camera travel and performance were already established, so the generated transformation had to answer to the photographed scene.

This is a selective use of AI-assisted visual effects: the chapel sequence resolves a physical limitation while the wider music video retains its live-action foundation. The integration depends on consistent perspective, light and timing throughout the shot.

EXPLORE THE CREATIVE PROCESS

01Give inner torment a visual form.

The palace’s underground spaces, gardens and chapel become different emotional environments for a night-time music video about grief and memory.

Develop the concept with Ramma and build a visual language through performance, architecture, cinematography and practical light.

02Establish the effect on set.

A 600-watt projector casts blue angel wings onto the chapel altar. The camera follows the artist forward, establishing perspective, scale and the lighting foundation.

Capture the real performance and travelling shot, with a practical projection that anchors the later transformation.

03Let the wings ignite.

Generative tools animate the wings and add fire around the altar. The effect must adapt to camera movement and interact with glass, metal, statues and walls.

Resolve a specific production limitation in one climactic sequence. A test was reviewed and approved by the artist.

04Preserve the filmed world.

Generated wings, flames and light are integrated with the artist’s performance, practical projection and existing chapel lighting through compositing and colour finishing.

Preserve the silhouette, architecture, changing perspective and visual continuity throughout the original moving-camera shot.
